Can Invisalign Fix an Overbite?

Can Invisalign Fix an Overbite?

Braces, including Invisalign invisible braces, are a great solution for straightening out teeth in both young and adult patients. But did you know that Invisalign clear aligners can also fix bite and jaw misalignment, including overbite problems?

An overbite is when your top front teeth protrude too far past your bottom front teeth, but by wearing your Invisalign aligners and undergoing treatment, you can fix mild to moderate overbite problems. Want to know what to expect from treatment, including how long it might take and how to accelerate it?

Learn from Dr. Park Family Dentistry how Invisalign invisible braces can help your overbite.

How do Invisalign invisible braces fix overbite issues?

Invisalign clear braces straighten teeth and treat other oral issues in a similar manner to metal braces. After visiting a dentist certified to perform Invisalign braces treatment, you will receive a clear aligner molded for your mouth. This aligner, when worn, will gently push your mouth into its desired position overtime just like traditional brackets and wires.

Because it is a removable aligner, you can enjoy the benefits of treatment without having to deal with the downfalls of metal braces, such as the ugly brackets and restrictions on foods. However, the one downside to Invisalign aligners is that they’re only recommended for mild to moderate misalignment. For severe oral correction, you may need to undergo surgery in combination with Invisalign aligner treatment.

How long will it take for Invisalign braces to fix my overbite issue?

Invisalign clear braces work in tandem with a child’s natural growth, so treatment is accelerated for younger patients. By following proper directions, including seeing a dentist when scheduled to swap out aligners, the average treatment for children can be completed in 12 to 18 months.

Adult patients can also benefit from Invisalign clear braces, but because their mouths have largely settled into the place, treatment does take longer. With the exception of mild teeth correction, the average Invisalign aligner treatment for adult patients will usually take around 24 to 36 months.

How can I make Invisalign aligner overbite treatment go faster?

Invisalign clear aligners are removable, so you can take them out when you need to eat, play sports, or engage in other activities where aligners would interfere. However, the most important rule is that the more you wear them, the faster treatment goes. In general, try to wear your Invisalign clear aligners for at least 20 to 22 hours a day.

Make sure you maintain proper oral hygiene habits to accelerate treatment by doing the following:

  • Brush at least twice daily
  • Floss and use mouthwash at least once daily
  • Maintain a balanced diet while reducing acidic and sugary foods
  • Visit your dentist when scheduled for adjusting aligners
  • Avoid smoking, vaping, and using similar intoxicants
  • Contact your dentist if your aligner is causing pain or you misplace it
